I have been looking for accurate comic templates and/or measurements with which to make a comic template for days. Now that I've finally figured it out, I thought I would share.

This is a template for a standard sized western-style comic (think Marvel or DC). I might try to figure out standard dimensions for Manga sometime, but I don't personally need to know them right now so don't count on them coming soon (unless a lot of people beg or something).

The three borders starting from the inside and going out are for live, bleed, and trim. BTW (because I didn't know this myself until a few days ago)...

LIVE is the area where all of the important stuff, like text and important details of a picture, go. If you want it on the printed page, it should be here.

BLEED is your entire artistic domain, but very important things shouldn't go to the edge of the bleed because it can get cut off when the page is being trimmed. If you want to do a 2-page spread, you should draw to the edge of the bleed on both pages so it will look like a continuous picture.

TRIM is the area that's going to be trimmed off, so don't draw anything in that space or you'll be wasting your time.

If you're using this to make digital comics, you can probably ignore the live, bleed and trim lines. This template is primarily for people who are working traditionally with pencil and pen on paper and potentially plan to publish.

I have also added some guidelines. There is a set of lines that divides the page into sixteen equal rectangles, and an other set of lines that divide the page into nine equal rectangles. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out which ones these are, so I won't go into a detailed explanation.

I don't expect that anyone is going to be making a 16-panel comic or anything, but I have provided these guidelines so you will know some of the basic dividing areas of the page. Use them however you like.

Good luck!

Additional Stats:
Downloadable: Yes, and at full size.
Page Size: 10" x 17"
Resolution: 300px/in
Mode: RGB (if you are planning to print, convert this to CMYK before coloring or the printing colors may not be what you had planned)
Scale: 150% of a standard comic (comic area would scale down to about 6 5/8" x 10 1/4")

Wow, this looks really useful! Is it also possible to open this in a digital program, or is this only meant for traditional media?

I've used it both ways. It's saved as a JPEG so it should be compatible with most programs.

Thanks! I find that templates really keep a comic layout cohesive. If you find a good use for it please feel free to share!
